How ASHPs work

Air-source heat pumps work by harvesting free heat from the surrounding air, even at temperatures below freezing, to deliver efficient space heating and hot water. The system’s refrigerant absorbs outdoor warmth at the evaporator, is compressed to raise its temperature, and then distributes that heat throughout your home. This three-stage cycle of extraction, conversion, and distribution ensures reliable, cost-effective comfort year-round.

Heat Extraction: Heat Extraction

Even in cold weather, there is heat energy present in the outdoor air. The ASHP system uses a refrigerant to absorb this heat from the outside air, even when temperatures are below freezing. Extracting temperatures from as little as – 15degC
Heat Conversion: Heat Conversion

The absorbed heat is then compressed by the heat pump’s compressor, raising its temperature to a level that can be used for heating purposes.
Heat Distribution: Heat Distribution

The now-heated refrigerant is circulated through the system’s indoor unit, where it transfers its heat to the air inside the building through a heat exchanger or fan coil. This warm air is then distributed throughout the building via ductwork, radiators, or underfloor heating systems.

During warmer months, the process can be reversed to provide cooling. The ASHP absorbs heat from inside the building and releases it outside, acting like an air conditioner.
